Pilates

Improves core stability, improves posture, and improves muscle tone.

Pilates is a all over body conditioning class which is an excellent base or supplementary exercise for any other form of physical activity and general wellbeing. It’s practiced by high profile celebrities and dancers to improve posture and give a long, supple body shape.

All of our Pilates classes are done on a mat, and in some the instructor may also use a ball or bands. The Pilates method is a physical fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates called his method contrology, referring to the way his method encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles. Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine.

In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso muscles, which are important to help alleviate and prevent back pain. Pilates largely avoids high impact, high power output, and heavy loading in general. The emphasis is not on building muscle mass but instead focuses on flexibility and alignment. Remember for those that are sceptics or love their weights, Pilates can successfully train muscles which bodybuilding and conventional gym aerobic training can just as easily avoid.
